What Do the Front Brake Discs Do?
Front brake discs are one of the most important safety components on your Porsche. As the brake pads clamp onto the rotating discs, friction is generated to slow and stop the vehicle while converting kinetic energy into heat.
Their primary functions include:
- Providing the braking surface for the front brake pads.
- Dissipating the high temperatures generated during braking.
- Delivering consistent stopping performance.
- Maintaining braking stability during repeated heavy braking.
- Supporting Porsche ABS and PSM systems.
- Providing precise pedal feel and driver confidence.
The front brake discs perform the majority of the vehicle's braking work and are engineered to cope with the demanding performance expected from Porsche GT models.
Why Do Front Brake Discs Wear Out?
Brake discs naturally wear over time through continual
contact with the brake pads. Common causes of wear include:
- Continuous friction from braking.
- High operating temperatures.
- Spirited road driving.
- Track day use.
- Brake pad wear.
- Heat cycling causing gradual disc wear.
- Corrosion from moisture and road salt.
- High vehicle mileage.
Over time, the braking surface becomes thinner and may develop grooves, heat spots or slight distortion, reducing braking efficiency.
When Should the Front Brake Discs Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended whenever:
- The discs reach Porsche's minimum thickness specification.
- Deep grooves or scoring appear on the braking surface.
- Brake vibration or pedal pulsation develops.
- Heat cracks become visible.
- Excessive corrosion affects the braking surface.
- New brake pads are being fitted to worn discs.
- During a complete front brake overhaul.
For optimum braking performance and safety, Porsche specialists recommend replacing the front brake discs in axle pairs together with new brake pads.

What Do the Front Brake Discs Do?
Front brake discs are one of the most important safety components on your Porsche. As the brake pads clamp against the rotating discs, friction is created to slow the vehicle while converting kinetic energy into heat.
Their primary functions include:
- Providing the braking surface for the front brake pads.
- Dissipating extreme braking temperatures.
- Delivering smooth and consistent stopping performance.
- Maintaining braking stability during repeated heavy braking.
- Supporting Porsche ABS and PSM systems.
- Providing precise pedal feel and maximum driver confidence.
Because the front axle performs the majority of the braking effort, high-quality brake discs are essential for maintaining Porsche's renowned braking performance.
Why Do Front Brake Discs Wear Out?
Brake discs are consumable service components that naturally
wear through continual use. Common causes include:
- Constant friction from the brake pads.
- High operating temperatures.
- Fast road and spirited driving.
- Track day use.
- Natural reduction in disc thickness.
- Brake pad wear.
- Corrosion from moisture and road salt.
- Repeated heat cycles over high mileage.
As the braking surface wears, performance can gradually decline, resulting in increased stopping distances, vibration or brake noise.
When Should the Front Brake Discs Be Replaced?
Replacement is recommended whenever:
- The brake discs reach Porsche's minimum thickness specification.
- Heavy scoring or grooves develop.
- Brake vibration or pedal pulsation occurs.
- Heat cracks become visible.
- Excessive corrosion affects the braking surface.
- New brake pads are being installed on worn discs.

Brake Disc complete with centre bell.
Brake Disc Type: 2-Piece Slotted
The Girodisc system is a direct replacement for the OE disc. No modifications are necessary, and it allows the use of unmodified factory pads. The disc will bolt directly to the car and work with factory calipers.
The central hat section of our rotor is made from strictly U.S. sourced 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminum. The disc is made from our own proprietary cast iron, poured in the USA and machined from start to finish in-house at Girodisc. The rotor utilizes a curved vane design, developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump to force cooling air through the disc.
The rotor and hat have a floating mount system, which utilizes 12 high strength alloy steel drive pins, manufactured by Girodisc in the USA to our own specifications and cadmium plated for a long lasting corrosion resistance. These pins take the load from braking actions while maintaining the axial and radial float between the hat and disc. The pins are secured by class 12.9 cap screws with hardened washers. In order to keep the rotors from making noise when cold, the pins are mounted with anti-noise spring washers on the rotor side which allow the rotor to grow with heat expansion but eliminate the rattle and noise associated with floating rotors. This float also allows the rotor to self center between the pads.
Once the Girodisc system is in place, simply replace the cast iron rotor when needed.

The Formula:R product line is the result of collaboration with the Zimmermann-sponsored racing team. Formula:R composite brake discs sometimes replace very expensive carbon-ceramic brake systems and are intended exclusively for use on the racetrack.
The composite technology with a light metal pot results in a significant weight reduction. This weight reduction leads to a clearly improved driving performance, since the brake discs are part of the unsprung mass. The ratio of unsprung to sprung mass is thereby increased in favor of the sprung mass. The traction and thus the control over the vehicle are noticeably improved.
Your advantages:
• Proven in racing
• Specially coated light metal pot and high-carbon cast friction ring with optimal thermal conductivity
• Highest performance of the disc even when it is temporarily hot
• Optimal ventilation and maximum stability thanks to sloping ribs in the ventilation channel
• Partly as a replacement for carbon-ceramic brake discs
• Free radial expansion through social connection of pot and friction ring
• Brake fading is avoided
• Sporty look with Z-grooves
• Developed exclusively for the race track

Fits:
Porsche 718 GT4 RS
Brake Disc Type: 2-Piece Slotted
The Girodisc brake rotor is a direct replacement for the OE discs, and provides significant performance benefits. The rotors are compatible with any of the current pads typically used with these cars.
Additional information:
Braking Performance: The rotor is a two-piece design developed in racing to produce a lightweight rotor that can compensate for the different expansion rates between the hat and rotor and eliminate the possibility of rotor warping.
The rotor and hat have a floating mount system, which utilizes 10 high strength alloy steel drive pins, which allows for axial and radial float.
More heat sink without a weight penalty: The Girodisc disc set weights in a little lighter than the OE system but with an important advantage. The rotors have grown in diameter. This means that weight has been transferred from the center hat were it does nothing to the outer diameter where it is actively absorbing and dispersing heat.
High Quality Materials: The Girodisc system uses only the highest quality materials and components. The rotors are high carbon content iron for long wear and stable thermal performance. The top hat section is machined from billet aluminum with an attractive anodized finish.
