Why Replace This Part?
Worn or fatigued rocker arms can lead to improper valve lift or seating, reduced compression, misfires, elevated emissions, and may affect overall engine reliability. Upgrading to a high quality OE Match rocker arm restores the integrity of the cam-to-valve train and helps maintain optimal engine performance and longevity.

Billet camshaft follower kit.
Complete kit of 12 x rocker arm, 12 x rocket shaft and 12 x adjuster screw
Fits:
Porsche 911 - 1965 to 1989
Porsche 964 - 1989 to 1994
Porsche 993 - 1994 to 1998
9m Racing 911, 964 and 993 camshaft follower kit - the best items you can buy for all high rpm and high lift race, air-cooled engine applications.
The 911 / 964 and 993 rockers are CNC machined from triple melt (high purity) alloy steel, hardened, ground, micro-finished and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated to reduce friction and wear on the pad. 911/964 rockets from standard are drilled for oil holes, while the 993 have no such holes. Ours, come drilled and fit both applications
Each rocker has detailed CNC machined work to reduce the weight to a minimum which allows for full contact on high lift cam lobes for up to 15mm of valve lift.
The 911 / 964 and 993 mechanical rocker shafts are also DLC coated to run in the steel bore of the rockers with less friction & wear compared to stock bronze bushes.
To complete the installation are the DLC coated "elephants feet" adjusters which significantly lowers the wiping friction between the foot and top of the valve to reduce valve and valve guide wear.

In Porsche's iconic air-cooled flat-six engines, valve clearance adjustment is a critical maintenance procedure. The rocker arm adjustment screw enables technicians to set valve lash precisely, helping maintain correct valve timing, efficient combustion, reduced valve train wear, and long-term engine reliability.
Whether you are carrying out a routine valve adjustment, rebuilding a cylinder head, or restoring a classic Porsche engine, replacing worn adjustment screws helps ensure accurate valve settings and dependable valve train operation.
What Does the Rocker Arm Adjustment Screw Do?
The rocker arm adjustment screw is used to establish and maintain the correct valve clearance between the rocker arm and the valve stem.
Its primary functions include:
- Allowing precise valve clearance adjustment
- Maintaining correct valve lash specifications
- Supporting accurate valve timing
- Reducing excessive valve train wear
- Ensuring smooth engine operation
- Helping maximise engine performance and efficiency
Correct valve clearance is essential on air-cooled Porsche engines, as thermal expansion during operation can significantly affect valve train geometry.
Why Does the Rocker Arm Adjustment Screw Fail?
Over time, the adjustment screw is subjected to constant mechanical loading, heat cycles, vibration, and repeated adjustment procedures.
Common causes of failure include:
- Wear on the adjustment tip
- Surface pitting or scoring
- Metal fatigue Excessive valve train loads
- Poor lubrication conditions
- Incorrect valve adjustment procedures
- Corrosion during long-term storage
- Damage caused during engine rebuilds or maintenance
As wear develops on the adjustment surface, maintaining accurate valve clearances becomes increasingly difficult.
Common Symptoms of a Worn Adjustment Screw
A worn or damaged rocker arm adjustment screw may cause:
- Excessive valve train noise
- Difficulty achieving correct valve clearance
- Frequent valve adjustment requirements
- Inconsistent valve lash measurements
- Reduced engine performance
- Increased wear on valve stems
- Rough running or poor idle quality
- Premature wear of related rocker arm components
In severe cases, excessive wear can affect valve timing accuracy and contribute to accelerated engine wear.
When Should You Replace It?
Replacement is recommended whenever wear is identified during inspection or engine servicing.
The adjustment screw should be replaced:
- During valve adjustment procedures if wear is found
- During cylinder head rebuilds
- During complete engine rebuilds
- When valve train components are being renewed
- If the adjustment tip is pitted or damaged
- When accurate valve clearance cannot be maintained
- During preventative restoration work
- On high-mileage engines showing valve train wear
Many Porsche engine specialists replace adjustment screws during major engine work to ensure consistent valve train geometry and long-term reliability

Worn or loose rocker arm bushings allow excessive shaft play, leading to noisy valve trains, inaccurate lift, premature shaft wear, and eventual valve timing issues. Replacing them with OE Match bushings during engine overhaul or top-end servicing restores proper geometry and prolongs the life of the valvetrain.
When to replace:
• Crankshaft or valve train noise
• Excessive lateral shaft movement
• High-mile engine rebuild
• During rocker shaft removal/service
• Preventive maintenance

Rocker Arms (Cam Followers) & Tappets – Precision Valve Train Components for Porsche Engines
The rocker arms (also known as cam followers) and tappets are crucial components within your Porsche’s valvetrain system. They convert the rotational movement of the camshaft into the vertical motion that opens and closes the engine’s valves, allowing precise control of air, fuel, and exhaust flow.
At Design911, we offer a complete range of rocker arms and tappets developed for Porsche engines across all generations. Manufactured from high-strength, wear-resistant alloys, these components ensure smooth operation, minimal friction, and long-lasting durability. Whether you’re restoring a classic air-cooled 911 or upgrading a modern GT engine, our quality valvetrain components deliver the accuracy and reliability your Porsche demands.
What Do Rocker Arms & Tappets Do?
Rocker arms and tappets form the mechanical link between the camshaft and the valves — controlling the timing and lift that determine engine breathing efficiency.
Core Functions:
- Transmit
camshaft movement to open and close the intake and exhaust valves.
- Maintain
precise valve timing for efficient combustion.
- Reduce
friction and wear through precise geometry and lubrication.
- Ensure
smooth, quiet operation across the rev range.
- Support consistent power delivery and optimal performance.
Well-functioning rocker arms and tappets are essential for maintaining engine efficiency, throttle response, and durability.
Why Do Rocker Arms & Tappets Fail?
Continuous exposure to high temperatures, pressure, and friction makes rocker arms and tappets susceptible to wear over time.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
- Oil
starvation due to blocked passages or poor lubrication.
- Surface
wear or pitting from high mileage or contamination.
- Excessive
valve clearance leading to noise and impact damage.
- Camshaft
wear causing uneven contact and mechanical stress.
- Material fatigue from prolonged high RPM use.
Symptoms of failure include ticking or knocking noises, loss of power, misfires, or excessive valve noise, all indicating the need for inspection and replacement.
Why Replace Valvetrain Components?
Replacing worn rocker arms or tappets restores accurate valve timing, reduces friction, and prevents camshaft or valve damage. Our high-performance, precision-engineered replacements are designed for exact fitment and long-term durability under extreme conditions.
Key Benefits:
- Restores proper valve timing and smooth operation.
- Reduces engine noise and friction losses.
- Prevents premature wear of the camshaft and valves.
- Manufactured from heat-treated, wear-resistant materials.
- Direct-fit
compatibility for a wide range of Porsche engines.
- Ideal for rebuilds, restorations, or performance upgrades.
A reliable valvetrain system ensures your Porsche runs smoother, quieter, and more efficiently — preserving both performance and longevity.
Highlights:
- High-strength rocker arms, cam followers, and tappets for Porsche engines.
