Track Rod Inner Joint

porsche

The steering rack controls the front wheels by means of two track rods, terminated by replaceable joints - the "Track Rod Ends", attached to the swivel hubs. These will eventually wear, leading to problems with steering and handling, as well as being a failure point on the UK MOT and presumably on the statutory inspections in other countries.

Fits:
Porsche 964 C4 1989-94
Porsche 964 RS

Track Rod Inner Joint
The OE Match track rod inner joint is a steering system component designed for Porsche 964 Carrera 4 and 964 RS models. This joint sits at the inner end of the tie rod (track rod) where it connects to the steering rack, forming a crucial pivot point within the steering linkage
Sold individually, we recommend these should be replaced in pairs

Fits:
Porsche 964 C4 1989 - 1994
Porsche 964 Carrera RS

Diagram Ref No 3.

The track rod inner joint is part of the steering linkage assembly that connects the steering rack to the front wheel hubs through the tie rods. Each steering rack uses two track rods, each terminating in replaceable joints that allow the linkage to articulate while transmitting steering input.

The OE Match version is designed to match the original Porsche component used on 964 Carrera 4 and RS models. It provides the necessary articulation between the steering rack and tie rod, ensuring precise steering geometry and smooth movement of the front wheels.

The inner track rod joint allows the steering linkage to pivot while transferring movement from the steering rack to the tie rod and ultimately to the front wheels. This articulation allows the steering system to function smoothly while accommodating suspension movement.

Replacing worn inner joints restores steering precision and eliminates unwanted play within the steering system.

Function
Steering Linkage Pivot: Connects the tie rod to the steering rack
Wheel Control: Transfers steering input to the front suspension
Articulation: Allows movement of steering components during suspension travel
Handling Stability: Maintains precise steering response and alignment

Track rod joints are subject to constant steering movement, road shocks and environmental exposure. Over time they can develop play or wear, leading to vague steering, poor handling or uneven tyre wear. Replacing worn joints restores accurate steering response and ensures the vehicle maintains proper alignment and road stability.

Consider replacing the inner track rod joint if you notice:
  Excessive steering play
•  Knocking or clunking from the steering system
  Uneven front tyre wear
 Steering instability during driving

Track Rod Inner Joint.
Upgrade or refresh the front steering linkage of your Porsche 964 with this inner track rod joint. Designed for the Carrera 4 and RS models from 1989 to 1994, this precision joint sits at the inner end of the tie rod, ensuring precise steering geometry and eliminating play. Whether you’re restoring a 964 or improving the performance of a track-prepared example, this component restores sharp, dependable steering feel and correct front-end alignment.
Sold Each.
x2 Required Per Car.

Fits:

  • Porsche 964 (911) C4 1989-93
  • Porsche 964 (911) RS 3.6L 1991-93
  • Porsche 964 (911) RS 3.8L 1991-93

What This Product Does:
  • The track rod system connects your steering rack to the wheels, transmitting input from the steering wheel to the front wheels. The inner joint is a key pivot point that allows the rod to articulate as the suspension moves, while keeping the steering geometry true.
  • A healthy inner joint ensures the rod length and alignment remain correct, minimal play is present, and the front wheels respond precisely to input without unwanted movement or lash.
  • In performance or modified cars, maintaining tight inner joints is especially important for steering precision, alignment retention, and overall front-end stability.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:

  • Steering play or slop — a vague or loose feeling in the steering, particularly around straight-ahead or under small inputs.
  • Knocking or clicking noise from the front end, especially when going over bumps or during steering movements, indicating the joint is moving where it shouldn’t.
  • Front alignment drifting or uneven tyre wear — because the rod end is no longer maintaining correct alignment under load.
  • Delayed or imprecise steering response — the front wheels might not change direction as promptly because the linkage has movement built in.
  • Inspection shows visible wear or looseness — The joint may have excessive play when physically moved, or the boot might be torn or missing, exposing the internals to dirt or contamination.

Why Replacement / Upgrade Matters:
  • A worn or loose inner track rod joint undermines your front-end suspension geometry and steering accuracy. Replacing with a new correct part ensures the steering system functions as intended, renewing precision and responsiveness.
  • On a Porsche 964 (especially C4 or RS models) where handling and driver feedback are key, a tight inner joint helps maintain the connection between driver input and front-wheel behaviour — critical for both everyday driving and spirited use.
  • It also reduces the risk of secondary wear: when one joint in the system is loose, other components (tie rods, rack ends, knuckles) may suffer increased stress or wear.
  • From a safety and inspection viewpoint, worn rod ends are common failure items during vehicle exams — replacing the inner joint is part of good maintenance.
  • If modifications (wider tyres, stiffer suspension, track use) are in place, ensuring all steering joints are in top order preserves the benefit of those upgrades and avoids a “weak link” in the steering chain.

What This Product Does:

  • The universal steering joint (u-joint) allows the steering shaft to transmit rotational torque from the steering wheel through one or more bends or offsets in the shaft assembly. This is necessary because the steering column is not always in a straight line to the rack/box — the joint compensates for misalignment, angles, and movement.
  • It also absorbs slight movement or misalignment in the column/shaft as the car body or chassis shifts under load, ensuring consistent steering input.
  • A properly functioning joint ensures steering inputs are crisp and without slop, meaning the driver feels direct connection between the wheel and the road.

Symptoms Of Wear Or When To Replace:
  • Steering play or looseness — the steering wheel feels vague or there is free movement before the wheels respond.
  • Clicking, clunking, or knocking noises in the steering column area when turning the wheel, especially when stationary or slow speed.
  • Vibration or harshness being felt through the steering wheel that wasn’t there before — could indicate joint wear.
  • Difficulty maintaining alignment of the steering shaft or column, or if the joint appears visually worn or has excessive movement when the wheel is moved by hand.
  • On inspection: the joint may show worn bearing surfaces, excessive play, corrosion or missing grease, or the coupling bolts may be loose or damaged.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • A worn or failing steering joint compromises the connection between driver and car — which is a crucial safety and performance component.
  • Replacing the joint restores steering precision, improves feedback and driver confidence.
  • It prevents further damage: a sloppy joint can transfer misalignment or stress to other steering components (column, rack, couplings).
  • If you’re restoring or upgrading a 964 / 993, fitting a new universal joint ensures the steering system is fresh and retains value.
  • From a safety standpoint, the steering column is a critical interface — ensuring all joints are correct supports overall integrity.

Common Porsche Steering Issues

Even the best-engineered Porsche components experience wear over time. Common steering problems include:

  • Low Power Steering Fluid- A frequent cause of heavy or unresponsive steering. Topping up fluid restores smoothness, but continual loss may indicate a leak.
  • Power Steering Leaks - If topping up fluid doesn’t solve the issue, check for leaks. Power steering fluid is usually clear or pink — look for patches under your car when parked.
  • Failing Steering Rack Mounts - Modern Porsches use rack-and-pinion systems. When rack bushings wear out, symptoms include - Jerky steering when going over bumps, Inconsistent wheel feel and Clunking, clicking, or popping noises in the column

If you notice any of these issues, it’s important to get your Porsche inspected by a specialist to prevent further damage.

Diagnosing & Replacing Porsche Steering Components

Steering issues are not always easy to diagnose without specialist knowledge. Our advice: book in with a Porsche specialist garage for a full inspection. They can pinpoint whether the issue is with the rack, joints, bushings, or hydraulics.
