Fits to no 1

You will need to retain the original metal central pinion from the broken factory plastic gear being replaced.
The angle of the teeth are from left to right on the LEFT gear and right to left on the RIGHT gear.

The plastic drive gears are a sacrificial component within the roof drive mechanism, transmitting power from the electric motor to the roof transmission. Over years of operation, the original gears can wear, crack or strip their teeth, causing the roof to operate unevenly or stop functioning altogether. Replacing these gears restores smooth power transfer, helping the roof mechanism operate quietly and efficiently once again.

Ideal for preventative maintenance or repairing a faulty roof motor, these OE Match replacement gears provide factory-quality fitment, dependable durability and excellent value.

What Do the Convertible Top Motor Drive Gears Do?

The plastic drive gears transfer rotational power from the electric roof motor to the convertible roof transmission mechanism.

Their primary functions include:

  • Transmitting drive from the roof motor.
  • Operating the convertible roof mechanism.
  • Ensuring smooth and synchronised roof movement.
  • Reducing shock loads within the drive system.
  • Helping protect more expensive drivetrain components.
  • Supporting reliable opening and closing of the roof.
  • Maintaining consistent roof motor performance.

As sacrificial components, the gears are designed to wear before more costly components suffer damage.

Why Replace the Convertible Top Motor Drive Gears?

The roof motor gears are subjected to repeated loading every time the convertible roof is operated.

Common reasons for replacement include:

  • Worn gear teeth.
  • Cracked plastic gears.
  • Stripped drive teeth.
  • Roof motor slipping.
  • Intermittent roof operation.
  • Roof motor running without moving the roof.
  • Preventative maintenance.
  • Roof refurbishment or motor overhaul.

Replacing worn gears restores the efficiency of the roof motor and can often eliminate the need to replace the complete motor assembly.

Symptoms of Worn or Damaged Roof Motor Gears

Common warning signs include:

  • Convertible roof stops during operation.
  • Roof motor can be heard running without movement.
  • Clicking or grinding noises from the motor.
  • Uneven roof operation.
  • Roof opens or closes slowly.
  • Roof fails to complete its cycle.
  • Jerky roof movement.
  • Visible damage to the original plastic gears during inspection.

Replacing worn gears promptly can help prevent unnecessary strain on the roof motor and transmission assemblies.

Benefits

  • Restores reliable convertible roof operation.
  • Eliminates worn or stripped drive gears.
  • Helps avoid replacing the complete roof motor.
  • Smooth, quiet power transmission.
  • Factory-quality fitment.
  • Long-lasting, wear-resistant construction.
  • Cost-effective repair solution.
  • Excellent value OE Match replacement.

Installation Recommendations

For the best results, inspect the complete roof drive system during installation, including:

  • Convertible roof drive motor.
  • Roof transmission gearboxes.
  • Flexible drive cables.
  • Roof linkages.
  • Pivot points.
  • Microswitches.
  • Roof control module.
  • Roof mounting hardware.

Clean old grease from the gearbox housing and apply a high-quality lubricant suitable for plastic gears during assembly. After installation, ensure the roof mechanism is correctly synchronised and fully tested through several complete operating cycles.

The flexible drive cable is a vital component within the electric roof mechanism. Over time, repeated operation, wear and contamination can cause the original cable to wear, bind or fail, resulting in slow roof movement, uneven operation or complete loss of drive. Replacing a worn cable helps restore reliable roof operation while preventing unnecessary strain on the roof motor and transmission assemblies.

Whether you're repairing a faulty roof mechanism or carrying out preventative maintenance, this OE Match replacement provides factory-quality fitment and dependable long-term performance.

What Does the Cabriolet Hood Drive Cable Do?

The pliable drive cable transfers rotational force from the roof drive motor to the convertible roof transmission.

Its primary functions include:

  • Transmits drive from the roof motor.
  • Synchronises roof movement on both sides.
  • Enables smooth opening and closing.
  • Supports consistent roof operation.
  • Maintains correct roof timing.
  • Reduces stress on the roof mechanism.
  • Ensures reliable electric hood operation.

A correctly functioning drive cable is essential for the safe and smooth operation of the convertible roof system.

Why Replace the Cabriolet Hood Drive Cable?

Convertible roof drive cables are subject to continual movement and mechanical loading throughout their service life.

Common reasons for replacement include:

  • Worn internal cable.
  • Cable breakage.
  • Frayed or damaged cable ends.
  • Corrosion.
  • Binding within the guide tube.
  • Uneven roof movement.
  • Roof mechanism repair.
  • Preventative maintenance during roof refurbishment.

Replacing worn drive cables helps restore smooth operation and reduces the risk of further damage to the roof mechanism.

Symptoms of a Worn or Failed Drive Cable

Common warning signs include:

  • Roof stops moving during operation.
  • One side of the roof moves faster than the other.
  • Roof becomes misaligned.
  • Clicking or grinding noises from the roof mechanism.
  • Slow or jerky roof movement.
  • Roof motor operates without moving the hood.
  • Roof fails to open or close completely.
  • Visible wear or damage to the drive cable.

Addressing these symptoms promptly can help prevent more costly repairs to the roof transmission or motor.

Benefits

  • Restores smooth convertible roof operation.
  • Ensures synchronised movement of the roof mechanism.
  • Helps protect the roof motor and transmissions.
  • Reduces the risk of roof misalignment.
  • Durable construction for long service life.
  • Factory-quality fitment.
  • Straightforward installation.
  • Excellent value OE Match replacement.

Installation Recommendations

For the best results, inspect the complete convertible roof system during installation, including:

  • Roof drive motor.
  • Roof transmission gearboxes.
  • Opposite-side drive cable.
  • Roof linkages.
  • Pivot points.
  • Guide tubes.
  • Convertible roof microswitches.
  • Roof control module operation.

Where one drive cable has failed due to wear, it is advisable to inspect—or replace—the opposite cable to maintain balanced operation and minimise future repairs.

Porsche 987-1 Boxster 2007-08

Porsche 987-2 Boxster 2009-12

Why replace this push rod?

  • Broken/ sheared plastic ball/socket — a frequent failure mode. When the white plastic ball or cup fractures the linkage can detach or move incorrectly, causing the roof to jam, mis-align or fail to latch. Forum reports show this is a common and recurring issue on 986/987 Boxsters.
  • Wear and play — worn pivots or loosened joints produce excess movement that causes the roof to mis-index, make clunks, or fail to fully engage the latches.
  • Bent or corroded rod — impact or corrosion can change geometry so the roof mechanism binds or the hood doesn’t seal flush.
  • Prevent secondary damage — a failing push rod may cause added stress to adjacent linkages, actuators or latch components. Replacing a worn/broken push rod early prevents more expensive repairs later.

Common symptoms that indicate replacement is needed

  • Roof won’t fully open or close; operation stalls.
  • Roof handle/actuator feels loose or has excessive play.
  • Loud clunking or grinding noises during roof travel.
  • Roof latches don’t engage or the soft-top sits misaligned.
  • Visible crack or missing plastic ball/socket at the rod ends.
