Porsche 987 Boxster ALL
Porsche 987C Cayman ALL
Porsche 997 ALL

The steering rack controls the front wheels by means of two track rods, terminated by replaceable joints - the "Track Rod Ends", attached to the swivel hubs. These will eventually wear, leading to problems with steering and handling, as well as being a failure point on the UK MOT and presumably on the statutory inspections in other countries.

•  Position: Front axle — inner connection between steering rack and track rod / tie rod end

Function: Transfers steering rack movement into lateral wheel motion;  Maintains front-end steering geometry and alignment;  Absorbs steering loads while allowing articulation through the joint.

Because the inner joint experiences constant load, steering motion and exposure to road conditions, its wear can lead to looseness or excessive play. A worn or failing joint can cause sloppy steering, uneven tyre wear, loss of alignment, wandering or imprecise handling - which not only affects driving confidence but also safety. Replacing the joint restores sharp, reliable steering and preserves proper alignment under load.

When to replace:
Noticeable play or looseness when steering at stand-still or during turning
Clunking, knocking, or unusual noise coming from the front suspension/steering when going over bumps or during steering movement
Difficulty maintaining correct front-end alignment, or frequent need to re-align after small adjustments
Uneven or premature front tyre wear
After wheel-hub, steering rack or tie-rod replacement or maintenance - as a precaution or when parts are disturbed
As part of scheduled maintenance on higher-mileage Porsche 987 / 997 vehicles

Common Porsche Steering Issues

Even the best-engineered Porsche components experience wear over time. Common steering problems include:

  • Low Power Steering Fluid- A frequent cause of heavy or unresponsive steering. Topping up fluid restores smoothness, but continual loss may indicate a leak.
  • Power Steering Leaks - If topping up fluid doesn’t solve the issue, check for leaks. Power steering fluid is usually clear or pink — look for patches under your car when parked.
  • Failing Steering Rack Mounts - Modern Porsches use rack-and-pinion systems. When rack bushings wear out, symptoms include - Jerky steering when going over bumps, Inconsistent wheel feel and Clunking, clicking, or popping noises in the column

If you notice any of these issues, it’s important to get your Porsche inspected by a specialist to prevent further damage.

Diagnosing & Replacing Porsche Steering Components

Steering issues are not always easy to diagnose without specialist knowledge. Our advice: book in with a Porsche specialist garage for a full inspection. They can pinpoint whether the issue is with the rack, joints, bushings, or hydraulics.

If replacement is required, our website makes it simple. Select your Porsche model and year, and we’ll filter the catalogue to show only compatible steering spares for your car.
