Diagram ref no 11

In modern Porsche diesel engines, hydraulic tappets play a crucial role in durability, refinement and emissions control—making them an essential service and repair component.

What Does an Engine Hydraulic Tappet Do?

Hydraulic tappets sit between the camshaft and valves, using oil pressure to compensate for thermal expansion and component wear. This allows the valve train to operate with:

  • Correct valve timing and lift
  • Reduced mechanical noise
  • Improved combustion efficiency
  • Lower internal engine wear

By automatically adjusting clearance, hydraulic tappets eliminate the need for manual valve adjustment and help maintain optimal engine performance throughout the rev range.

Why Do Hydraulic Tappets Fail on Porsche Diesel Engines?

Over time, hydraulic tappets are subject to heat, oil contamination and mechanical stress, particularly in high-torque diesel engines.
Common causes of failure include:

  • Oil sludge or poor lubrication
  • Wear to internal check valves
  • Loss of hydraulic pressure retention
  • Extended oil change intervals
  • Contaminated or incorrect oil grades

Symptoms of worn or failing tappets may include:

Ticking or tapping noises from the cylinder head Rough idle or misfiring Reduced engine efficiency Increased valve train wear

Why Replace Worn Hydraulic Tappets?

Replacing worn hydraulic tappets restores:

  • Quiet and smooth engine operation
  • Correct valve timing and combustion
  • Reduced wear on camshafts and valves
  • Long-term engine reliability

Ignoring tappet wear can lead to accelerated damage to the camshaft and valve train, resulting in significantly higher repair costs.

Product Information
Product Information
Hylomar Gasket 3400 is a modified anaerobic curing, flexible sealant designed to become a Formed in Place (FIP) Gasket when cured. The cured compound has good temperature resistance and high resistance to fretting. The cure is initiated when the compound is in contact with metal ions and in anaerobic conditions. The cure rate and final strength is dependent on the metals being joined and the temperature at which the component is used. The heat generated by a running engine will accelerate the cure.

Typical Applications
Hylomar Gasket 3400 can be used as a gasketing compound between machined surfaces. It is ideal for sealing between mating faces on engines and transmission components where resistance to temperature and vibration are essential.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Hylomar Gasket 3400 should be applied to clean and dry surfaces, free of contamination such as oil or grease. The compound may be dispensed by hand from cartridge, concertina pack, or via a screen printing system. Once applied the joint should be assembled as soon as practical. Any excess compound can be easily wiped off external surfaces with a clean cloth soaked in Acetone or other suitable solvents.

Intake manifold gasket.
The genuine Porsche intake manifold gasket is a factory-specified sealing component used on the 4.0 L diesel version of the Porsche Panamera (971 generation). It sits between the intake manifold and the cylinder head, providing a durable seal that prevents air and charge-pressure leaks in the induction system.
Sold each.

Fits:
Porsche 971.1 Panamera 4.0L Diesel 05/2016 - 12/2020 TDI CR

Diagram ref no 2 and 9

• Position on Vehicle: Between the intake manifold and the cylinder head (intake side) on the engine block.

Applications: Ideal for replacement when the intake manifold is removed or during maintenance/intervention where the original gasket may have been disturbed, degraded, or if the engine exhibits induction leak symptoms (like rough idle, turbo boost drop or check engine lamp).

A properly functioning intake-manifold gasket is key to maintaining correct air intake, charge-pressure retention and combustion efficiency. A leaking gasket can lead to poor engine running, reduced boost, increased emissions or even turbocharger strain. Replacing it with the genuine product ensures factory-correct sealing, protects your engine’s performance potential and helps preserve value.

 Common Porsche Engine Issues

Porsche engines are robust, but some models face well-known issues that require rebuild or replacement parts:

  • Excessive Engine Smoke – often caused by oil separator failure or oil overfill; a common issue in 996 and 986 models
  • IMS Bearing Failures – particularly affecting certain 996 models; early detection can save an engine, but advanced failure may require a complete rebuild
  • Timing Chain & Belt Problems – worn components can affect performance and cause catastrophic failures if neglected
  • Exhaust Leaks – damaged manifolds or gaskets allow fumes to escape, impacting performance and emissions

While some issues are minor and corrected with a single replacement part, others can escalate into major rebuilds if ignored.

Do I Need to Rebuild My Porsche Engine?

Not every problem requires a full rebuild. Regular oil changes, inspections, and routine servicing can prevent many issues. However, an engine rebuild may be required if:

  • IMS bearing failure has caused internal damage
  • Timing components have failed
  • Major wear or overheating has damaged pistons, valves, or crankshafts
  • You want to restore your engine to factory condition
  • You’re seeking performance gains beyond OEM output

Rebuilds are common across a wide range of Porsches, from air-cooled icons like the 356, 911, and 914s, through to 996, 997 GT3s, and turbocharged models. Whether for restoration or performance, rebuilding can breathe new life into your Porsche.
