Porsche 991 Enhancements: Improving the Upgrade

The 50 year development of the iconic 911 hit a new milestone with the 991 series. Unleashed in 2012, the seventh-generation iterations of the marque improved on their predecessors in build quality, option choice, and looks. But that doesn’t mean that, a full decade after the rubber hit the road, 991 owners can’t upgrade on what’s there, does it?

This being Porsche, there were multiple configurations – the Carrera, Carrera S and 2015MY GTS – and the bodystyles were the classic shapes – cabriolets, coupés, and Targas.

Whichever the option is, the 991 can really shift. The rear-wheel-drive C2 rockets from 0 to 62mph in 4.8s; the Carrera in 4.5s. Porsche fitted the all-wheel drive C4 with 7-speed manual and 6-speed PDK automatic gearboxes. Those in the know describe the choice as a toss-up between the C2’s agility and the C4’s greater ride confidence.

Power is nothing without control and our brake pad and disc packages are the most economical option for anyone looking to harness all those horses, and include genuine Porsche parts. Alternatively, maybe an upgrade is in order: check out these caliper mounting stud kits and rotor slotted brake discs and these Pagid RSL track racing brake pads.

Anchors away!

Drivers of the 2015MYS will know the initialism GTS is for ‘Gran Turismo Sport’, a legacy term from the ‘60s which, in the 2020s, identifies a car optimised for road and track use. And if you’re going to put your Porsche through its paces on the track, you’ll need to uprate your stopping power.

These PFC track and race brake pads fit front and back and take your brake pads from the standard issue material up to Carbon Metallic® a less compressible pad offering improved initial bite and reduces pedal travel by nearly a half inch. Complement them with this Goodridge PTFE and stainless steel overbraid brake hose set.

Be more chill.

In these cars, AC condensers, usually located in front of the radiator, dissipate heat extracted from the cabin. AC condensers need good air flow to cool the hot gas, which leaves the condenser as a high-pressure liquid. As with any integrated system, the oldest component is likely to fail first, so Design 911 offer radiator and condenser kits, to ensure that the whole system is changed simultaneously.

Meanwhile, the air con compressor, or air con pump, pressurises the refrigerant, turning it from liquid into gas. It’s a lot of work and failures happen, so we only market genuine Porsche components and OE replacement compressors.

The best time to implement any upgrades is when your car is already having a planned stop. Design911 offer great value by combining oil filter, pollen filter, two air filters, a sump plug ring and six spark plugs in one service package. Insist on proper lubricants, too, like these Mobil oils – available in different sizes. Ignition coils come in packs of six, and we offer genuine Porsche components and OE match options. You’ve probably not given too much thought to your drive belt, either, but it’s not a place for compromise. Only premium materials ensure increased strength and longevity, improved grip and traction, preventing slippage and maintaining consistent performance.

And while you’re there, keep your glass best in class by swapping out your wiper blades and arms front and rear, for LHD and RHD cars, for these genuine Porsche and Bosche components?
