Rear Brake Pad Wear Sensor.
The OE Match Rear Brake Pad Wear Sensor is a high-quality replacement braking system component designed to monitor the condition of the rear brake pads and alert the driver when the friction material reaches its minimum safe operating thickness. Manufactured to OE specifications for fit, function and reliability, this sensor helps ensure timely brake maintenance and supports safe braking performance.

rear

Fits:
  • Porsche 928S4 5.0L 1989-92
  • Porsche 928GT 5.0L 1989-91
  • Porsche 928GTS 5.4L 1992-95

Installed directly into the rear brake pad assembly, the sensor continuously monitors brake pad wear and communicates with the vehicle's brake warning system. When the brake pads wear down to a predetermined limit, the sensor activates the dashboard brake wear warning light, notifying the driver that rear brake pad replacement is required.

What This Product Does:
  • Monitors rear brake pad wear throughout the service life of the brake pads.
  • Activates the brake wear warning indicator when replacement is required.
  • Provides early warning of rear brake maintenance needs.
  • Helps prevent excessive brake pad wear.
  • Protects brake discs from damage caused by worn brake pads.
  • Supports safe and effective braking performance.
  • Assists with preventative brake system maintenance.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
  • Brake wear warning light remaining illuminated.
  • Intermittent brake wear warning messages.
  • False brake wear alerts despite adequate brake pad thickness.
  • No warning light when brake pads are excessively worn.
  • Damaged, broken or frayed sensor wiring.
  • Corrosion or physical damage to the sensor body.
  • Brake monitoring fault codes stored within the vehicle system.
  • Warning light remaining active after brake pad replacement.

Why Replacement Matters:

  • Rear brake pad wear sensors operate in demanding conditions and are exposed to heat, brake dust, moisture, road debris and constant vibration. In many applications, the sensor is designed to wear alongside the brake pads and should be replaced whenever new rear brake pads are installed to ensure continued monitoring accuracy.
  • A damaged or malfunctioning sensor can provide inaccurate brake wear information, potentially resulting in unnecessary warning lights or failure to alert the driver when brake pads require replacement. If brake pads wear beyond their service limit, braking performance can be reduced and costly damage to the brake discs may occur.
  • Replacing a worn rear brake pad wear sensor restores accurate brake wear monitoring, ensures proper operation of the dashboard warning system and helps maintain safe braking performance. An OE Match replacement provides factory-style fitment, dependable operation and long-term reliability, making it an essential component during rear brake servicing and maintenance.

Front Brake Pad Wear Sensor
Sold each - 2 required per car

Maintain the safety and performance of your Porsche braking system with this OE Match Front Brake Pad Wear Sensor 92861236601, designed specifically for Porsche 928 models produced between 1992 and 1995. This sensor forms an important part of the factory brake monitoring system, providing an early warning when the front brake pads have reached their minimum service thickness.

Fits:

  • Porsche 928GTS 5.4L 1992-95

Installed directly into the brake pad assembly, the sensor monitors brake pad wear and activates the dashboard brake warning light when replacement is required. This simple but essential component helps prevent excessive brake wear, protects expensive brake discs and ensures the braking system continues to perform at its best.

For high-performance grand touring models such as the later Porsche 928 S4, GT and GTS, maintaining the brake wear monitoring system is essential for both safety and reliability.

What Does a Brake Pad Wear Sensor Do?

The brake pad wear sensor continuously monitors the thickness of the brake pad friction material.

As the brake pad wears down, the sensor eventually makes contact with the brake disc and triggers the brake wear warning circuit, alerting the driver that replacement is required.

A correctly functioning sensor helps:

  • Monitor brake pad condition
  • Provide early brake wear warnings
  • Protect brake discs from damage
  • Improve maintenance scheduling
  • Support safe braking performance
  • Reduce unexpected repair costs
  • Maintain factory brake monitoring functionality

The sensor provides valuable advance notice before brake performance is affected.

Why Do Brake Pad Wear Sensors Fail?

Brake wear sensors operate in a demanding environment exposed to heat, vibration, moisture and road debris.

Common causes of failure include:

  • Normal brake pad wear
  • Sensor activation due to worn pads
  • Damaged sensor wiring
  • Corrosion within electrical connections
  • Heat-related deterioration
  • Physical damage during brake servicing
  • Water or dirt contamination
  • Age-related component degradation

Because the sensor is designed to function alongside the brake pads, replacement is typically recommended whenever new brake pads are fitted.

When Should a Brake Pad Wear Sensor Be Replaced?

The sensor should be replaced whenever it has been activated, damaged or when new brake pads are installed.

Common symptoms include:

  • Brake wear warning light illuminated
  • Intermittent brake warning indications
  • Damaged or broken wiring
  • False brake wear alerts
  • Corroded electrical connections
  • Sensor damage during brake servicing
  • Brake pad replacement due to wear

Replacing the sensor at the same time as the brake pads helps ensure the brake monitoring system remains fully functional.

Why Replacement Matters

A functioning brake pad wear sensor helps maintain braking safety and reduces the risk of costly brake system repairs.

Benefits include:

  • Accurate brake wear monitoring
  • Reliable warning light operation
  • Improved vehicle safety
  • Protection of brake discs
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Better servicing accuracy
  • Enhanced braking system reliability
  • Long-term brake system protection

For Porsche 928 owners, maintaining the factory brake wear warning system helps preserve both driving confidence and vehicle safety.

  • Large storage capacity (120,000 sets) for rapid availability
  • OE quality standards
  • OES quality Long service life
  • Smooth and consistent braking performance
  • Complies with ECE R90 regulations
  • Excellent corrosion protection
  • Complete range from a single supplier

What they do
  • These pad units convert the motion of your vehicle into stopping power by pressing the friction material against the disc, transforming kinetic energy into heat in a controlled manner—ensuring reliable deceleration, consistent response and minimal fade.
  • The pb:z line uses friction-material mixtures drawn from up to 25 different raw materials, tailored specifically for each vehicle’s braking system and usage profile.
  • Manufactured with careful control of temperature, pressure and time, the production process ensures that each pad set meets the design criteria for braking comfort, precision and functional safety.
  • Your advantage: the pb:z range in ‘OES-quality’ (Original Equipment-Standard quality) delivers highest level of brake comfort, precision for highest functional safety, and is available for some special applications.
  • Further benefits: long lifespan, very smooth performance, and conformity to ECE R90 standards for braking performance.

Why brake pads fail
  • Friction-material wear: Over time, the pad material thins, reducing the effective contact area and friction coefficient. When the pad becomes too thin, stopping distance increases and performance deteriorates.
  • Thermal overload or glazing: Under repeated heavy braking or mismatched pad/disc pairing, the surface can harden or glaze, losing its ideal friction characteristics—leading to fade or uneven braking.
  • Uneven pad-to-disc contact: If pads don’t make full uniform contact due to disc warpage, caliper misalignment, or incorrect installation, only portions of the pad carry load, which accelerates wear or creates hotspots.
  • Corrosion or contaminants: Although the pb:z line offers optimal corrosion protection, external factors (salt, water ingress, lack of maintenance) can degrade surfaces, impairing pad stability and life.
  • Loss of comfort/damping features: If design features like damping plates or proper backing-plates are compromised, then vibration, noise or uneven wear may emerge—reducing the pad’s effective lifespan or creating failure symptoms.

Why they should be replaced

  • Maintain stopping power and safety: To retain predictable braking distances, consistent pedal feel and full system responsiveness, the pad set must operate within specification. Once friction material wears beyond safe limits, system performance suffers.
  • Protect the rest of the braking system: Worn or failing pads can lead to disc damage, caliper piston overheating, or uneven rotor wear—resulting in higher repair costs down the line.
  • Preserve refinement and driving comfort: The pb:z pad set offers smooth, quiet operation with minimal noise or vibration. Replacing at the correct time preserves that comfort and refined braking feel.
  • Conform to regulatory and planned performance standards: Since these pads are designed to comply with ECE R90 and built to high-precision standards, replacing them at appropriate intervals ensures you retain this benchmark level of braking behaviour and safety.
  • Match the development pedigree: These pads result from advanced development cycles (2-3 years plus extensive testing) and represent a replacement-grade compared to generic alternatives. Choosing timely replacement helps you maintain performance aligned with original design intent.

brembo

Reliability and high quality

Brembo Racing | SPORT | EVO 500++ brake fluid is ideal in all conditions, fit for all, from everyday driving to non-professional intermediate use on the track.

This is a reliable high quality fluid that improves pedal feel and consistent braking performance without the frequent inspection intervals of a full racing brake fluid.

Formulated for real enthusiasts

  • Suitable for use in braking systems designed for non-mineral fluids.
  • Purposely designed to meet the expectations of enthusiasts who demand a lot from their system.
  • Exceeds the requirements of specification U.S. FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 and DOT 4, SAE J1703, SAE J1704 and ISO 4925 (classes 3 and 4).
  • Compatible with other DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 brake fluids, as long as they comply with the above specification.

For safety reasons, it is recommended to replace your brake fluid at least once a year. Not Suitable for vehicles with mineral oil systems. Colour range: appearance from transparent to amber. In the case of new brake fluid, when poured out from the sealed bottle, the colour may differ from the range, but the performance remains the same.

At Design911, we supply the highest-quality brakes and components for Porsche models, from classic air-cooled icons to the latest high-performance vehicles. Our range includes:

  • Brake pads, discs, and complete brake kits
  • Brake cables, hoses, and wear sensors.
  • High-performance upgrades and OEM replacements.

We stock leading brands such as Brembo, EBC, Pagid, Black Diamond, and Performance Friction, all trusted by Porsche drivers worldwide.

Why High-Quality Brakes Matter

Driving a Porsche means handling superb performance and speed - but that makes your brakes just as critical as your engine. High-quality brakes give you:

  • Maximum stopping power when you need it most.
  • Resistance to brake fade under repeated heavy braking.
  • Improved safety and confidence on both road and track.
  • Longer lifespan and better durability under load

Ceramic vs. Semi-Metallic Brake Pads

Semi-Metallic Pads

  • Made from iron, copper, steel, and graphite.
  • Excellent heat transfer and fade resistance.
  • Durable and cost-effective option.
  • Ideal for heavier vehicles or daily performance use.

Ceramic Pads

  • Superior heat management, keeping brake fluid cooler.
  • Consistent performance during repeated hard stops.
  • Quieter operation with less dust and rotor wear.
  • Premium option – higher cost but outstanding durability.

What Are the Best Porsche Brakes?

Genuine Porsche Brakes

Designed with motorsport DNA, OEM Porsche brakes deliver exceptional rigidity, responsiveness, and consistent performance under heavy loads.

Brembo Brakes

Italian engineering with world-class reputation. Brembo pads and discs provide increased stopping power and long service life, perfect for road and track.

Performance Friction (PFC)

Considered by many as the ultimate braking solution. Used in motorsport and street applications, PFC brakes meet or exceed OE standards while offering unmatched consistency on track days and performance builds.

When to Replace Your Brakes – Common Faults to Watch For

Brakes wear gradually, so regular inspection is vital. Look out for:

  • Squealing, grinding, or scraping noises.
  • Longer stopping distances or spongy pedal feel.
  • Vibrations or pulsing under braking.
  • Warning lights (ABS or brake wear indicators).
  • Pulling to one side when braking.

If you notice these symptoms, it’s time to replace your brake components with high-quality OEM or performance parts to maintain safety and driving pleasure.

Explore our full range of Porsche brake pads, discs, and kits – from daily driving replacements to full motorsport upgrades – all available directly from Design911.

1. Will these brakes fit my specific Porsche model and year?

Yes. Use our model and type selector in the top navigation or VIN lookup to ensure you only see brake parts compatible with your exact Porsche model, year, and variant.

2. Are these brake parts compatible with ceramic or steel brake systems?
Each product listing clearly states compatibility with ceramic or steel brake systems. Not sure? Call us, our team can quickly confirm for your specific vehicle.
3. What’s the difference between OEM, OE, and aftermarket brake components?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are made by the same company as your Porsche’s factory brakes. OE (Original Equipment) refers to parts matching original specs but may be from alternative suppliers. Aftermarket parts offer alternative options, sometimes with enhanced features or better value.

4. Are these brake pads suitable for high-performance driving or track days?

We offer a full range of pads, from everyday road use to high-performance and track-focused compounds. Check the product description or contact our team for recommendations based on your driving style.

5. Can I install brake pads and discs myself, or do I need a professional mechanic?

Some experienced DIYers install brake pads and discs themselves, but we recommend professional fitting for safety and to ensure proper function, especially on high-performance vehicles.

6. Do I need to replace the brake wear sensors or hardware with the pads?

It’s often recommended to replace brake wear sensors and hardware (like clips and shims) when fitting new pads for optimal safety and performance. Check product listings for included items or call our team for more information.

7. What’s the lifespan of brake pads and discs under normal driving conditions?

Brake lifespan varies by driving style and model, but most Porsche brake pads last between 20,000 and 40,000 miles. Discs usually last longer. Regular checks are advised.

8. Are there any warranties or guarantees included with the purchase?

Yes, every brake pad and disc purchased from Design 911 is covered by our standard warranty for quality and fitment. Details are available at checkout or by request.

9. How do these brake kits compare in quality and performance to Porsche genuine parts?

Our brake kits include trusted OEM, OE, and leading aftermarket brands. Many match or exceed Porsche’s own quality standards and offer great value without compromise.
